Tango Práctica

Wednesday 7 - 9 PM
Hosted by Joe Cope
Venue to be announced.

Práctica is an event when tango enthusiasts get together and practice. At the práctica the environment is informal and dress is casual. The práctica provides a low-pressure environment that helps people learn from each other. It is expected that we all work on the things that we are not good at. It is OK to stop in the middle to figure out things with your partner.

People dance to a set of music called a tanda. A tanda is a set of songs (usually four songs) by the same tango band. The tandas are separated by a cortina (literally curtain). Cortina is a type of music other than tango which lasts about 30 seconds. Its purpose is to clear the floor to allow partner changes. Normally you would dance the whole tanda with the same partner.

Milonga

Second Saturday of the month
Venue for April to be announced
8-9 PM class, 9-11 PM dance
$5 cover includes class and dance

Milonga is a formal event when the tango enthusiasts get together and dance. The format is similar to that of the práctica except that here it is rude stop the dance in the middle and start teaching your partner; instead, you need to do your best to get the dance going. The purpose of the milonga is just to have a good time. Milonga atmosphere is warm and romantic and it is quite common to dress up.

Recorded music is generally played at milongas. The music program includes all three major classes of tango rhythms: tango, milonga and vals. Most of the music played is classic tango music from the Golden Age (approximately 1935-1952), which has rhythms most suitable for dancing.
